New mobile website and mobile application with better UX for Konitgo

What was our task?

Kontigo, our Partner, needed to improve the operation of its e-store on mobile devices – the existing application, provided by another software house, turned out to be too complex and problematic to manage with such a large number of changes introduced to the online store. Therefore, the decision was made to completely discontinue the mobile store.

So the challenge was to respond to Kontigo’s sudden need and create a mobile application… without creating a mobile application, because this service is not in our portfolio.

Initial goals

  1. Beat technology. Ultimately, the Kontigo store was to be available in Google Play and AppStore, so we had to work in this direction and at the same time bypass the issue of creating a mobile application, because this is a service we do not provide.
  2. Improve conversion. We wanted to improve the user experience of the mobile version of the website and thus increase sales.

How did we manage to achieve this?

Instead of having the application written anew, our Partner took the recommendation into account and decided to trust the Fast White Cat team with a new, innovative approach to the application, i.e. Progressive Web Application – PWA. PWA is a web application that uses modern technologies and design patterns. PWA applications are fast, secure, responsive, compatible with all browsers, and also enable sending PUSH messages and update automatically. Moreover, the PWA application is indexed by search engines and consumes much less memory on the mobile device.

PWA is the latest website creation technology, which is already functioning efficiently in the Fast White Cat offer. So we found a way to achieve the goal, i.e. the possibility of having Kontigo appear in the AppStore and Google Play, without creating a mobile application. What? Creating a new frontend for our Partner’s e-shop.

In the case of PWA, the entire Magento backend, i.e. Magento Headless, all business logic and all data are cut off from the frontend, so this is where we had the most work to do. Due to the budget, we wanted to use everything that was already ready, so as not to start from scratch – we already had our Kontigo store project on Magento 2, done so well that we used its backend. We had to implement GraphQL endpoints for the customized parts so that the frontend displayed the data correctly. We also worked on the Venia template, which was adapted to the individual look of the Kontigo brand

The business goal was to increase conversions by making shopping easier for our customers and increasing their loyalty.

The pace of market development resulted in the decision to accelerate the implementation of the new application. The business goal was to increase conversions by making shopping easier for our customers and increasing their loyalty.

We decided on the PWA solution because we see it as an incredible potential for the development of sales and communication with customers, while taking into account the project implementation time, functionality and optimization of implementation and further maintenance costs. I think that PWA is an ideal solution for businesses that are not giants on the market but aspire high.

Kontigo has been our long-time partner and it was thanks to mutual trust that we were able to implement something that no one has ever done before using PWA Studio from Adobe.

The culmination of the project for the Kontigo Management Board was the ability to install mobile applications from the AppStore and Google Play. We approached this task in two stages – first, we implemented the e-shop in PWA technology in production, and then we started working on issuing mobile applications. A production-operating PWA e-shop was a necessary condition to start working on the release of mobile applications.

Together with Kontigo, we took this risk regarding the relatively new technology from Magento – we finalized the challenge by having two tech leads in the project dealing with the backend and frontend PWA layer. The team consisted of Magento backend developers and React developers. We completed the project in four months, from the beginning of work to the production implementation of the e-store. We encountered a lot of technological challenges during our work, but the good team and support of Kontigo have now allowed us to enjoy success.

Effect, or how it works…

The PWA application that we have prepared for Kontigo provides a better user experience – it works faster, loads only the necessary elements instead of the entire page, and allows the page to be rendered in advance for robots so that they have no problem reading each page. Updates do not always require backend modifications, so you can modify the frontend itself independently.

Our project is a pure version of the store, written in the form of an application in React technology, thanks to which the “app” is flexible and more reminiscent of a classic mobile application, and implementing any additional functionality will not be a problem. It was also a challenge to connect extension modules to Magento, which are not adapted to PWA – so we had to adapt, among others, payment operator, but we also worked on additional improvements that our Partner wanted, so we have prepared a personalized, proprietary module that allows you to separate orders analytically, so that the Kontigo store staff can see whether the order comes from an application installed from the AppStore, Google Play or directly from the store . We have also added a module thanks to which we can add content that will only be visible in the mobile application. Additionally, after completing PageSpeed Insights, it turned out that we needed to work on the page loading speed to improve its positioning in Google – so we created a headless browser using the Open Source module – Seo Snap. Thanks to these actions, we significantly increased the website’s rating – up to 85 points during the day.

Development?

Of course! We plan to further expand this project and constantly create new functionalities.
